Brush Often but Don’t Be Aggressive

Most people are aware that they need to brush their teeth twice a day. However, brushing regularly is only effective if one uses the correct technique. Most dentists recommend brushing using small, gentle circular motions, ensuring that one moves the toothbrush across the front, top, sides, and back of every tooth. This process should take a minimum of 2 minutes. People should never move the brush in sawing back-and-forth motions when brushing.

Use a Toothpaste with Fluoride

Many dental professionals believe that fluoride can help prevent cavities. It’s also a common ingredient in mouthwash and toothpaste. However, some dental products are fluoride-free. Evidence indicates that a lack of fluoride can cause tooth decay, even if a person takes care of their teeth and gums otherwise. A recent study even found that flossing and brushing don’t prevent cavities if people don’t use dental products that contain fluoride.

Floss Once Every Day

Flossing can remove bacteria as well as plaque from between the teeth – these are places that the toothbrush can’t reach. Flossing can also keep bad breath at bay. Although there’s not a lot of long-time research that proves flossing is beneficial, the ADA and the CDC recommend that people floss their teeth regularly. When flossing, it’s important to gently move the floss in up-and-down motions between the teeth. Don’t snap the floss up and down because it can damage the gums.

Visit the Dentist Twice a Year

Visiting a dentist regularly will help keep major dental issues at bay. How often a person should visit the dentist will depend on their age, health history, and overall dental health. However, most professionals recommend at least two visits every year.
